An Ace in the (Spider) Hole

You'll probably find that I'll be extra active on the old Diaryland server today, because I'm stuck at home with yet another cold. Most of the symptoms have subsided, though, so none of you have to worry about sending any virtual cans of Campbell's classic chicken noodle soup. I think I can fend for myself.

Anyway... I don't know what to think about the new Saddam business. Yes, I'm glad "we got him," but it doesn't even seem real yet. I keep watching those repeated reels of footage with Saddam having his grungy mess of hair searched for ticks and lice, and I can't help but think that maybe we got the wrong guy. He looks so weak and small, as though he were the real vicitim of all the bombings and raids. Where is the man that promised to douse us all in anthrax? What happened to the vicious dictator who vowed to punish all Americans for their insolence and intrusiveness? He's turned into this skinny little shell of a man, that's what. A small, and petrified version of his former self.

All my life, there has been a Saddam Hussein, firing warning shots atop his Baghdad palace and giving wrinkled grimaces as warnings to the likes of Big and Little Bush. I was only five when the whole Desert Storm issue blew up, and just fourteen when he decided to kick UN inspectors out of the country. And now that he's been captured... Man, does that even sound right? "Saddam Hussein has been captured..." I can't get my brain to wrap around those words yet.

It doesn't seem real.
